2/16/1993Dr. U.R. Ananta Murthy elected President of the Kendra Sahitya Academy.
5/20/1750Tipu Sultan, tiger of Mysore, was born. He was the son of Hyder Ali and born at Devanhalli village near Bangalore. Hyder Ali named his son after a great Sufi saint namely Tipu Mastan Aulia. Tipu Sultan was a great revolutionary freedom fighter, social reformer, musician and architect.
12/16/1867Amy Carmichael, Scotch Irish missionary, was born. She went to India in 1895 under the Zenana Missionary Society, remaining there without furlough until her death 56 years later. An invalid during her last 20 years, she worked to rescue children from the Hindus.
8/1/1993Jananayak Debeswar Sarmah, great freedom fighter, architect and nationalist, died at Jorhat, Assam.

He contributed greatly to public life, fighting against caste system, untouchability etc. He was closely affiliated to the 'Servants of India Society' with Ghokhaleji. He even declined to accept the ""Bharat Ratna"" award conferred on him.
