5/7/1907The First Electric Tramway service commenced in Bombay (Mumbai). This service was inaugurated by Municipality Chairman Vallabhdas Thakersey and Municipal Commissioner Sheppard at 5.30 p.m. This tram was well decorated and destined from Municipal Office upto Crawford Market.
9/22/1979Israel conducts nuclear test at Indian Ocean.

7/20/1990GOI notifies restrictions on liberal import policy announced earlier. The restrictions will cut the import bill by about Rs. 1000 crore.

3/24/1977Morarji Desai elected leader of Janata Party and sworn in as the Prime Minister of India at New Delhi. Later he formed his cabinet. He was in the office of Prime Minister till July 28, 1979. This was first non-Congress Government in India.
7/6/1998Salman Khursheed is appointed the new UPCC(I) chief. While Tindivanam K. Ramamurthy is the new TNCC(I) chief, Sat Mahajan has been appointed HPCC(I) president.
12/7/1993Lalthanhwala sworn in CM of Mizoram.
8/9/1942The Congress at its Bombay session passed the famous Quit India resolution, calling for mass struggle on non-violent lines on the widest possible scale, under the leadership of Gandhiji. He stressed that ""We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery""; popularly known as ""Do or Die"". But before the Congress could start the movement, the government arrested all the major leaders and the Congress was declared illegal. Spontaneous popular revolts broke out with the battle cry of 'British Quit India'.
