3/18/1922Mohandas K. Gandhi ""Mahatma,"" the great spirit, sentenced by British authorities to six years in prison for sedition at Sabarmati. Gandhi was sentenced just eight days after he was arrested. The British acted hastily after government officials in London and India were criticized for not arresting him sooner. In London, the Secretary of State for India was forced to resign because of the controversy over Gandhi. In India, the arrests of Gandhi and other Indian nationalists had only increased sympathy for their cause.
11/21/1973Seth Govinddas, M.P. of Jabalpur, was honoured in the Central Hall of Parliament for completion of 50 years in Parliament, which was an unprecedented record.

1/26/1950The new Indian awards known as Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra and Vir Chakra, were finally selected in June 1948 and annouced on the first Republic Day. Param Vir Chakra to the Victoria Cross, the Maha Vir Chakra to the Indian Order of Merit and the Vir Chakra is equivalent to the Military Cross. The Ashoka Chakra series, meant for gallantry other than in the face of the enemy, was probably meant to replace the George Cross, Albert Medal and George Medal.
